Meet our baby drill!

A new face at Edinburgh Zoo is delighting visitors.  This baby drill is keeping dad Illembo and mum Nora on their toes. Even at a young age the baby drill is inquisitive and bold.  Drills are the most endangered primates in Africa and face a high risk of extinction in the wild so this birth is good news for the conservation of this fascinating species.

This week visitors to Edinburgh Zoo have been discovering all sorts of creepy crawlies up close from the Queensland Titan stick insect to the bird eating tarantula.  The event proved a big hit with visitors over the October holidays but if you haven’t made it to Edinburgh Zoo yet, creepy crawlies will be open until the 23rd and the last weekend of October.

Meanwhile our education team have been celebrating the International Year of Forests.  Visitors to the Rainforest room have been building birdfeeders, making masks and learning more about forests and the animals who live there.

Last week’s firewalk challenge was a great success.  The 16 brave volunteers raised just over £1,700 to our veterinary equipment appeal.  A big well done and thank you to everyone who took part!

I’m also delighted to announce we now have hit 10,000 likes on our Facebook page.  We’re offering our online admirers a chance to win family membership for a whole year so hopefully that number will go up even higher.  For more details please visit our Facebook page.

In Knapdale footage of the beavers making home improvement to their lodge before winter sets in has been caught by our camera traps. You can learn more about the Scottish Beaver Trial and keep up to date will all the news from the beaver family with the Scottish Beaver Trial Blog.

At the Highland Wildlife Park staff are putting the finishing touches on the Great grey owl enclosure. The New Forest Reindeer enclosure has also just been completed.

Finally, there is still time to get a great deal on entry to both the Highland Wildlife Park and Edinburgh Zoo with the Visit Scotland two for one deal.  The offer runs until October 31st. Please visit our promotions page for details.
