Valentine’s Day at RZSS

We have enjoyed a loved up day across the society this Valentine’s Day. With a number of our animals receiving Valentine’s Day treats, visitors to our You Tube channel can enjoy a short Valentine’s Day cartoon, featuring some of our animals and fifty luck people had their very own personalised messages broadcast on our panda cam, as part of their special Valentine’s Day package.
Edinburgh Zoo panda keeper Alison Maclean took delivery of her very own ‘panda cake’ in the form of a four tiered vanilla sponge cake topped with sugar characters of Tian Tian and Yang Guang from a local Edinburgh cake decorator.
The four tiered masterpiece created by Eunice Hessell of Cakery Bakery Edinburgh, also features many of the other inhabitants at Edinburgh Zoo, including penguins, a koala, tiger, chimpanzee, lion, lemur, flamingo, pygmy hippos, zebra and many more. A couple of the Zoo’s resident wild squirrels even get a look in!
“I loved the panda Valentine’s Day cake the moment I saw the photograph – it’s fantastic. You can really see how much work has gone into producing it and I’m pleased to accept it on behalf of Edinburgh Zoo. Eunice the cake designer has amazingly crafted all the animals, in particular Tian Tian and Yang Guang, and they look quite perfect together on the top of the cake for Valentine’s Day!
“I’m sure the real pandas would love to get their hands on this wonderful creation, however they’re going to have to settle for my panda cake! But the staff here at the Zoo are certainly going to enjoy tucking into Eunice’s cake with their morning cuppa.”
Not to be out done, Walker the famous polar bear at the Highland Wildlife Park was one lucky bear this Valentine’s Day as even he received a secret love token from an unknown Arctic admirer.
Our bachelor bear is being spoilt with a hand-crafted love heart scented with a few of his preferred treats.
At the end of last year Walker’s keepers at the Highland Wildlife Park in Inverness-shire had hoped they’d found the three year old polar bear a future mate, but unfortunately she was found to be pregnant. Good news for the polar bear population, but not so great for Walker.
However this popular bear doesn’t have to go without love, as the fortunate fella has the love of his keepers, park staff and not to forget his numerous fans across Scotland and the rest of the UK.
Daska Macintosh, Visitor Services Manager at the Highland Wildlife Park, said:
“Walker has become a bit of a celebrity here at the Highland Wildlife Park, and as with most well-known personalities, he’s received a small – well actually quite big – love token from his secret valentine!
“We’d be delighted to get our well-loved bear loved-up himself before the end of the year with a mate, but we’re hoping that this heart coated with some of Walker’s favourite goodies will do the trick in the meantime and get him feeling the love this Valentine’s Day!”
